Remembering Roy

Today the McGaheysville Vol. Fire Co. remembers a very special young man who we were blessed to have in our firehouse family. Roy Dale Smith, III was a dedicated member and was working hard to fulfill his dream of being a career firefighter when he lost his life in a vehicle accident on the way to a structure fire 10 years ago today. The Officers and Members of Company 80 extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of Capt. Anthony R. Whetzel of Rockingham County Fire/Rescue and Broadway Vol. Fire Co. Capt. Whetzel lost his battle with cancer on Saturday, Sept. 15th and will be laid to rest today. He leaves behind a wife and two small children and many, many brothers and sisters in his Fire/EMS family.

Structure Fire on 3-15-2018

McGaheysville and Grottoes firefighters were dispatched for an explosion which quickly upgraded to a structure fire. Units marked on location with a fully involved structure threatening other exposures. Master streams were deployed to knock down the fire and hand lines used to mop up. Virginia's 4 P.M. Burn Law is in Effect.

Vice President Mark Monger, February 15

The Commonwealth's 4 p.m. Burning Law goes into effect Feb. 15, 2018 – the start of spring fire season in Virginia.

This law prohibits burning before 4 p.m. each day (Feb. 15 – April 30) if the fire is in, or within 300 feet of, woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials.

A violation of this law is a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine. In addition ... (Full Story)

No Caption Remebering the losss of Roy Dale Smith III 9 years ago today

What seemed as though in the early morning hours of Nov 7th, 2008 as another routine fire alarm call turned out to be a tragic day for MVFC. While responding to what turned out to be a working structure fire -Firefighter Roy Dale Smith III lost control of his vehicle that early morning and lost his life.
